WE earn: YOU earn
Generating revenue
The objective of a Trade Association is to support its members and to do this it must generate revenue. The Learning Practitioners’ Association (LPA) has been working to create two major products that will enable it to become THE recognised voice for learning and development practitioners within the UK. These products are Certified Learning Practitioner (accredited member status) and Certificate in Learning Practice Management (qualified member status).

To sell these products the LPA needs exposure to as wide a community of interested individuals and companies as humanly possible. To gain this exposure the LPA has decided in consultation with the Council of Members to offer a commission to any user or member that introduces an individual or organisation to the LPA that results in a sale.

In effect; when WE earn; YOU earn.

Commission model
The commission model agreed is:

  • For members (hold a current subscription at the time of the introduction) a payment of 3% of the value of the resulting sale
  • For non members (registered users) a payment of 1% of the value of the resulting sale

Scenario 1
Member A introduces a client that is looking to put a small team of 6 managers through a training qualification. The LPA negotiate with the member’s client to run a bespoke CertLPM qualification at the client’s offices. The resulting contract with the member’s client is worth £21,000 and as a result A is paid a commission of £630 for the introduction.

Scenario 2
Member B passes on a flier and prospectus of the CertLPM qualification to a colleague that is looking to gain training related knowledge and skills. Member B’s colleague contacts the LPA to seek further information and decides to book on the next open CertLPM programme. The cost of the programme is £4,950, and as a result B receives £150 for the introduction.

Scenario 3
Non member C suggests to a colleague looking for a professional development programme that the CLP might be worth a look. The colleague gets in touch with the LPA to seek further information and decides to sign up to the CLP accreditation. The cost of the accreditation is £1,950, and as a result C receives £20 for the suggestion.

How will this work?
We would ask you to spread the word about what the LPA is doing amongst your networks; real, social, business, and virtual. When you do please include your unique reference number !?????! (found in Edit Membership) and instruct those you tell to use your reference number when they get in touch with the LPA. We will let you know when an introduction has been made and keep you informed of progress. Payments to you will be made after monies have been secured. The CLP and CertLPM are VAT exempt. Commission payments indicated are the total payable and any VAT/Tax liabilities are dependent on an introducers business model and will be the responsibility of the introducer.

New web structure for the Association
January 2010

The Association now has a new web structure/presence on the internet.

The TrainerBase web site is now focused on 'Purchaser' activities. The Find a trainer searches and posting of opportunities will continue on this site.

The Association has its own domain www.learningpractitioners.org.uk and all 'Member' activity will take place on this site including editing of profiles, subscription, viewing opportunities and other information about the Association and its products and services.

This change will help communicate that users and members are part of the Learning Practitioners' Association i.e. a presence on the TrainerBase requires membership of the Association.

Association announces legal help line for members
25 October 2009

The Learning Practitioners’ Association which incorporates the TrainerBase has announced the launch of a free legal help line for members.

“The LPA has added another member benefit to the raft of services it provides to its members” said Peter Mayes, Chief Executive of the Association. The Association has been in dialogue with a number of legal help line providers and believes the service offered by Law Express was the most suited to its members.

The legal help line service offered by Law Express covers both business and personal interests. “This we felt was very attractive to our members; many of whom are sole traders and the distinction between work and personal interests can become a little blurred”.

This member benefit as addition to the existing benefits increases the value package of membership to over 3 times the cost of membership. Other benefits of full membership include;
• discount professional indemnity insurance
• web enabled profile
• free advice and guidance on learning and development practice
• free copies of TJ, the journal for learning and development
And that is not forgetting that the average value of contracts won by members of the Association is £12,500.

Announcing a new web site for the Learning Practitioners’ Association
22 August 2009

The Learning Practitioners’ Association is evolving into an important entity within learning and development and is launching a new web site.

In order to continue the development of The Learning Practitioners’ Association (LPA) a new web site is to be launched. The domain www.learningpractitioners.org.uk will become the main site for the trade association. The Association will be splitting the current TrainerBase web site into 2 separate domains, a rationalisation of the current 3 themes on the TrainerBase site. The pages that are of interest to purchasers of training including the Find a Trainer facility and the adding of tender opportunities, will remain on the TrainerBase domain. The training provider links/pages and the trade association pages will be migrated to the new www.learningpractitioners.org.uk web site.

“This separation of the Association www.learningpractitioners.org.uk from TrainerBase one of its products www.trainerbase.co.uk will give us the ability to brand the Association with its own messages, logos and colours” said Peter Mayes, Chief Executive of the LPA. He went on “This will also simplify the TrainerBase service and make it more useful for purchasers and increase the activity of those looking for trainers. The member activity will be centred in the Association site and we will be able to focus the message on this site towards training providers”. The completion date for this next stage of the evolution of the Learning Practitioners’ Association is December 2009.

New voice and certification standards for UK learning practitioners
24 July 2009

Trainerbase has evolved into a new organisation, The Learning Practitioners' Association, to become the voice of learning practitioners in the UK and a market-place where learning practitioners attract new business and to establish its ‘Certified Learning Practitioner’ standard as the preferred choice for excellence in learning practice in the UK.

The evolution of TrainerBase from its roots as a web site helping trainers find business and business find trainers into a not for profit trade association representing learning and development practitioners has taken another important step.

It’s official: TrainerBase Ltd has now formally changed its name to ‘The Learning Practitioners’ Association’. This name change, granted by the Secretary of State, is another significant milestone in positioning the Association as the representative body for all individuals substantially engaged in, or actively working towards, consultancy, design, development and/or delivery of training whose recipients are outside statutory education.

The TrainerBase web site will continue to operate as one of the Association’s major services to its 500+ members, providing a valuable marketing channel for the members of the Association who share in the £2 million + worth of contracts awarded as a direct result of their presence on the site.

The Learning Practitioners’ Association has defined 3 core strategic aims:
• to become the voice of learning practitioners in the UK
• for TrainerBase to be the dominant market place in the UK for learning practitioners across all engagement models
• for the Association’s ‘Certified Learning Practitioner’ standard, and any associated accreditations and qualifications to become the routes of choice for excellence in learning practice within the UK.

The Association has embarked on a root and branch review of its position, branding and marketing with a view to achieving these aims.

ASSOCIATION APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR.
26 March 2009

TrainerBase, the trade association for freelance trainers, courseware developers and training advisers has appointed an additional director to the executive team.

TrainerBase is pleased to announce the appointment of a fourth director to the Association. Steve Rouse has accepted the invitation to join us as Technical & Research Director. As an Architect of the Standard and Certified Learning Practitioners (CLP) accreditation, inaugural member of the Professional Standards Committee, and CLP Assessor, Steve has already made a significant contribution to the development of TrainerBase as a trade association, bringing a sharp eye for detail and a wealth of experience across the learning & development sphere, especially around learning design.

Previously heading up the learning design function for the Department for Work & Pensions' corporate centre, Steve went freelance in 2006, forming his own company, Learning in Practice Ltd, and now works on both an associate and direct basis. Steve holds an MA in Management Learning & Leadership from Lancaster University and has previous experience as a director of companies limited by guarantee.

In his role as Technical & Research Director, Steve will take responsibility for the Standard/CLP and their development, as well as research to support professionalism within learning practice.

Phil Wheeliker, Operations & Change Director commented "In accepting this invitation to be part of our Executive, Steve will strengthen our ability to establish a body which represents individuals and organisations providing training services.

History

TrainerBase was created in 2001 as an online database of freelance and independent training providers. The web site at www.trainerbase.co.uk became the place for:

  • Trainers to find Business and for
  • Business to find Trainers.

The site grew from a list of a few hundred members to a database of over 6,000 registered users.

In 2003, the first requests were made to TrainerBase, to create a body that specifically represented the needs of freelance and independent training providers.

In 2006, as a result of requests from training purchasers to recommend trainers, TrainerBase started the development of its Standard.

In 2007, as a way of meeting both the needs of both trainers and of purchasers, TrainerBase changed constitution to become:

  • TrainerBase; The Learning Practitioners' Association.

As The Learning Practitioners' Association, TrainerBase is in a unique position to improve the success of its members and assist purchasers of training in finding the most appropriate trainer for their needs.
