A NEW WORLD FOR BUSINESS? A NEW WORLD FOR LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT?

25 May 2010

The effects of the new world of business and bad management and the implications they have for the learning and development (L&D) market and its professionals will be uncovered by Ruth Spellman OBE, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute, at the renowned World of Learning Conference 2010, being held at NEC Birmingham on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 September.

Ruth Spellman OBE, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute will present the renowned World of Learning Conference 2010, opening address, entitled A new world for business?, setting the agenda for the key topics to be discussed throughout the two-day event. She will assess the impact of new business conditions on L&D professionals and the most realistic and effective ways to react to these. Ruth will also discuss the need for efficient and strategised management, a pertinent issue for all companies.

“There’s a clear need for employers to drive leadership skills among potential and existing managers. Yes, many people have innate leadership qualities, but organisations need to nurture these skills and develop capability over the long-term if they are to be truly competitive. Failure to act will only increase levels of disengagement, impact negatively on staff retention and restrict economic recovery,” said Ruth Spellman.

“Studies show 50 per cent of people don’t leave jobs, they leave bad managers, whilst a further 47 per cent leave their positions because they haven’t received the L&D opportunities they were promised. Employees nowadays are too aware and ambitious to wait around, so unless employers ensure a process is in place for developing talent they will struggle to find, retain and motivate the right people.”

Within her presentation, Ruth will delve into key L&D issues and shed light on the ways industry members can be at the forefront of new practices in light of an evolving business environment. The implications and challenges placed on L&D, the effect of increasing recruitment on the talent pool and how L&D can combat the resulting widening skills gap from decreased L&D investment are among the subjects to be explored.

“UK businesses have been through major changes in recent years so skills have needed to change in line with this. This poses additional challenges for L&D and it’s something that needs to be recognised and addressed accordingly,” commented Alison Church, Senior Conference & Marketing Manager at Venture Marketing Group, organisers of the World of Learning Conference 2010.

“Ruth will address the impacts of recent economic forces on UK plc, and the resulting role that L&D must play in ensuring their organisations are equipped to deal with competition and business growth. This will form a vital introduction to the themes that then run through the following two-day conference,” she continued.

Other notable experts joining Ruth at the World of Learning Conference include the event’s second keynote speaker, Jayne Stokes, Head of Learning at Santander; Mike Booth, Learning Technologies Manager at Cable&Wireless Worldwide; and Omar Ismail, People Development Director at Radisson Edwardian Hotels. Topics will include: developing line managers as facilitators of L&D; maximising business performance through a collaborative strategy for talent development; and facilitating and dealing with change through learning. The programme comprises a series of interactive panel discussions, participative workshops and individual presentations, with each session featuring experts from the respective fields.

The full programme is available at www.learnevents.com. Early booking discounts are available and delegates can take advantage of a special offer to receive a Toshiba Ultra-Compact HD Camcorder when they register for the two-day event.

The World of Learning Conference 2010 has been extensively researched and developed with the interests and needs of HR and L&D professionals from all public and private sector realms in mind.
